A Little About You...

What are your expectations for this class and for yourself in this class? What are your outside activities (job, extracurriculars, etc.) and how do you plan to manage your time? Please give me an example of your typical, busy day and how you plan to devote the necessary time for this class?

What do you think of when you hear the word movie? What is your favorite movie? Why?

Required: 2 full, well-developed paragraphs. Due: Friday, September 5.

  1. It doesn't really matter to me what I get in the class, as long as I know I put forth my full potential. I hope to do the best of my ability, and have fun in the process. I expect it to be rather time consuming, although in the end, it will be worth it. I mainly look forward to putting out created and well crafted films as the year goes on. As of extracurricular activities, the only thing I do is Tae Kwon Do, which is 2-3 times a week, each class being an hour. I never really have anything busy to do, and if I get caught up on schoolwork one night, I just focus on getting it done.

When I hear the word movie, I think entertainment, mainly for a chance to escape reality and go in a place where anything is possible. I have a lot of movies that I really like, although my top three favorites would be Full Metal Jacket, Life of Pi, and Up. The things that I really like from these movies are the social interactions and the character development throughout the movies. They are movies that take you on an adventure, where you don't really know what will happen next.

  2. I enjoy making videos and would love to learn details of movies and how to make them better with putting an actual meaning to the shots. I find angles, shots and lighting extremely interesting and love a good angle I just would love to be able to interpret it all correctly and put it into use myself. I actually do a decent amount of extracurriculars. After school I have golf and after that I get my homework done. As the year goes on I will be staying after for sound and light crew rehearsal for different events in the auditorium. Golf will end and basketball season will start up and then that will end and I have rugby season to look forward to. I know how to time manage and get all my work done on time usually after or before a sports practice and will be able to do a lot during the light and sound crew rehearsals. I will also eat food haha.

When I hear the word movie ,honestly, the first thing I think of is too expensive because of the Regal prices but that's a different story. I think of the most recent movie I went to see. With this class I hope to think of something special when I hear the word movie and become a scholar in film because right now I'm a basic movie watcher, I strive to be more than just that, and develop a deeper love for the process in which they are made. I do not have a favorite movie because no movie has stuck out to me as amazing, but the 2014 Planet of the Apes movie was the most recent movie I have seen and honestly the best movie I have watched in a while. I say that because of the togetherness the apes expressed toward each other was just beautiful to me.

  3. First and foremost, I expect an enormous workload from this class. I knew that before I signed up for the class, and I believe that the extra effort is worth it simply because I have an interest in analyzing films and also picking up a camera and making my own media. I am determined to maintain, at the very least, a "B" average throughout the two years i will be in IB Film. My outside activities either consist of going to work or hanging out with friends. I am pretty good with time management and i strive to get my priorities taken care of and on time. I understand that IB Film will take up a lot of my free time in and outside of school but nonetheless I am willing to sacrifice any time needed for IB Film material.

When I hear the word movie, i think of the words "digital art form". Movies are simply expressions of emotion that are glued to a story line. My favorite movie is undoubtedly "The Godfather". Directed by Francis Ford Coppola, Mr.Coppola took a film genre that was overplayed in the wrong way in the early '70s, and added a sort of Shakespearean dramatization to bring back the films true inner qualities, where its not the action or shoot-outs that make the movie, but the action of the actors words that make the movie what it truly is.

  4. As does everyone, I expect an enormity of work from this class, a deprivation of free time, but a high amount of learning and growth, not only in film-related, but in analysis and time management. I expect some struggle, during times when it feels like I have so much work my head could explode, but I’ll manage. My extracurricular activities, or to be more correct, activity, is Tae Kwon-Do, on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:30 to 9:15. That shouldn’t be much of an issue, considering I can still stay after school and work, and I’m usually done with homework by then. The busiest day I usually have would be a Thursday with a lot of homework, and I could manage easily by… just focusing and working efficiently.

When I hear the word movie, it brings to mind entertainment, something fun to do. I also think captivating, a detailed plot I can lose myself in for an hour or two. I think of a life more interesting than any a real person could have. My favorite movie, by far, would be Napoleon Dynamite. The story is hilarious yet not unrealistic. All the characters are thoroughly and uniquely designed and characterized, and they provide a menagerie of quotes for any situation. And yet, Napoleon Dynamite doesn’t seem like a high-grade, professionally done movie. That makes it more relatable, as does Napoleon’s anti-heroism. He’s awkward, unpopular, a more interesting version of the stereotypical high school nerd. Overall, it’s a close-to-home, quirky version of high school life that keeps getting better.

  5. I have pretty high expectations for this class; I expect it to be a whole lotta fun, but I also expect it to be a hell of a lot of work, and a challenge for the next two years. As for expectations about myself, I expect to put in my full effort for this class, to try my hardest but also to - like I said - have fun. Since I work at Wegmans - a job that sucks up most of my weekend - and am also involved in clubs and extracurricular activities such as the musical, Masterminds, and Sugar and Jazz, a jazz band out in North Tonawanda, I plan to manage my time by keeping a strict schedule of what is due for Film, and to get each assignment done as soon as possible, regardless of due date. As for an example of a typical busy day, it obviously varies day to day, but my busiest day would probably go something like this: school until 2:30, Masterminds until 3:30, Work until 9:00, and then Homework until 11:00 (or whenever I finish). However, I do not work on school days very often, and plan on adjusting my work schedule according to my school demands, so I expect it shouldn't be a big deal.

When I hear the word movie, a lot of things spring to mind, and as such it would be hard to pick out exactly what the word movie means to me. To me, movies are about emotion, about camerawork, about plot twists, about reverse plot twists, about good acting, about bad acting, about so bad it's good acting. I could go on, but I think you kind of get the point. In regards to my favorite movie, I don't think I have any one movie I could single out as my favorite. It all depends on what genre you're talking about and what mood I'm in. I do have a sort of top five, however - In no particular order:
    Kill Bill (I & 2)
Pulp Fiction (I'm big on Tarantino)
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
    Blade Runner
The Blair Witch Project (Still the best found footage movie ever, and a strong contender for scariest movie ever)

  6. When I hear IB film, I think of the dedication the class requires inside and outside of school. According to past year IB Film students, there is no such thing as a light workload. When I signed myself up for the course, I was originally just thinking of how much I liked the photography and film medias. I would also love to be able to watch, listen to, and speak of movies intelligibly. I also want to rise to the challenge of this course's difficulty, learning about film analysis through movies from different cultures and eras. Outside of school, I play piano, guitar, sing in a choir, and am on the rowing team as well (which is in the a.m.). Even with all of these extracurriculars, I feel like I have all the time in the world to devote to school work and IB Film as time management has always been very important to me.

When I hear the word "movie", I think of a form of expression that consists of moving pictures and images that send a point across to the viewer. Good movies leave the viewer pondering the meaning or messages sent to them, marveling over the different aspects: sets, costumes, actors and actresses portrayals of characters, and what it all comes together to represent. My favorite movie is the recent release: Boyhood. Filmed over a span of 12 years, the film shows the growth of a boy named Mason. There is no real climax or crazy life-changing event, it's simply life, brilliantly and accurately displayed for our own viewing. There are obvious changes as time passes but there are other things that are more discrete in their progression, which we probably do not pick up in the passage of our own lives. It leaves one walking away with the knowledge that things will ultimately end up ok no matter what curveballs are throw at you through life.

I expect this class to be challenging yet informative on the process of filmmaking and film viewing while expecting myself to rise to that challenge and learn as much as possible. This year i plan on doing many activities but the most time consuming by far would be Track and Field in the spring. Practice is every day after school for a few hours and on meet days even longer. In order to complete my work in a timely fashion i will have to stay on top of my schedule and utilize every bit of spare time i can, and if i still dont have enough time i will have to put my priorities in order of what matters most, which is film. On an average day i wake up, go to school, unwind by training for track (jogging) and then do any homework that i had written down in my planner. I will always be able to find some time to complete any necessary work that needs to be done.

When i hear the word movie, i think of a visual form of entertainment that can alter people's emotions, opinions, and perspective on life. Every movie has some kind of meaning behind it depending on what the film maker wants to present. My favorite movie at the moment is Kill Bill. I like it more for the methods and techniques used in it, than for its plot. The interesting camera angles and techniques are amazing to watch. Although the movie is mostly with live actors, Quentin Tarantino manages to insert an anime bit that fits in really well to describe a characters background story. I can only hope that someday one of my movies has people's eyes glued to the screen in fascination.

  8. IB Film is meant to challenge it's students, so that is not something that will make me regret my decision. This class has always been what I wanted to get into once I was eligible, since the eighth grade. While I may not have the best time management skills, I will not let myself fall back into old habits, I will succeed in this class. My big planner while be of great use this year as I try and make a schedule for myself once I get a feel of what my working habits should be. I have been an active member of Model UN, Key Club, Writer's Ring and Youth court since at least the 9th grade(except Youth Court, I started in eighth). Since both Model UN and Key Club meetings are in the morning once a week, they shouldn't interfere with my work schedule, though we do have at least two conferences a year to attend for Model UN, but that's at a later point in time. A normal day for me is to get to school, either just sitting and doing nothing or finishing up a homework/ getting in some last minute studying before I go through a normal day with my day ending in me being home doing homework. Seeing as I have a good chunk of time after school to do work, I don't feel very concerned about balancing my work this year, especially since I have a study hall.

Whenever I hear the word "movie" I think of pretty much a electronic book on a screen that people can see and hear. Movies tell stories, some true and others not so much, but they all tell a tale. Some speak of a culture or great thing long gone while others speak of the vast future that is unknown. Making movies/Films is an art, and it can be very hard and very challenging at times, but it almost always pays off in the end. I have two favorite movies, both are very different from each other. One is Hayao Miyazaki's Spirited Away while the other is John Hughe's The Breakfast Club. Their soundtracks are what keeps me in love, especially Spirited Away's. While I don't think I will ever be that skilled, I hope one day that I can at least stand closer to them than where I am now.

  10. Ever since the beginning of sophomore year, my work ethic began to dwindle. Having been urged by countless numbers of people the near insane workload this class entails, I found it an instrumental course selection to use as an outlet to reapply myself, and exhibit my capabilities I know I withhold. In addition, the class always intrigued me, but in different ways as my years progressed at City Honors. Of course, naïve, my first thoughts were that we would watch movies and make them, simple, and flat. Now, I am painfully aware of just how much work this class will turn out to be. The only thing that I do outside of school, really, is go to the library. As far as extra-curricular activities, I have the Musical, usually starting in December, that will definitely push me to the brink of my work ability.
I am ready to dedicate myself to something I know I will thoroughly enjoy doing. Since class on Friday I have not been able to prevent myself from looking for alternate meanings riddled throughout television shows, and movies. I believe this symbolizes the absorption of the material already made, evidence that I have already subconsciously committed to this class wholeheartedly. I am now more aware how much planning, and system have to do with making a film. The pieces fit together to create a masterpiece that the general public, unfortunately, cannot appreciate to its full capacity. I would love to learn how to do exactly that. In the same instance, I would like to learn how to make such an art form myself. Although now, the task seems daunting, I am ready and able to perform necessary steps in order to achieve the knowledge I wish to obtain. I am hoping this class is an outlet for my ability, and I cannot wait to open new doors, and unlock new knowledge about films that for so long seemed nothing more than a moving picture. Also! When I hear the word movie I think of many things. I used to think of a leisurely activity I did with my friends. Now it seems like much more. It seems like an intricate puzzle, with pieces scattered throughout, waiting to be appreciated by a watchful eye. It seems like someone's careful planning and methods in order to spew ideas throughout the moving picture, that would further convey a deeper meaning. It is a series of implicit meanings waiting to be uncovered by anyone courageous enough to search for and discover.

  11. Ever since I heard about IB Film years ago I've been waiting; I've been eagerly anticipating my Junior year. Now it's finally here. I won't lie, when I heard about the amount of work this class entailed I felt overwhelmed. I was so stricken with fear because since I came to City Honors my work ethic has rapidly degraded into nothingness. Even as I'm typing this I am sure choosing this class was a mistake. I'm a horrible procrastinator. I don't have any extracurriculars and my job is appointment based so I don't work 5 days a week for however many hours. More often than not after school I go home and do whatever I have planned for the day. Even with this amount of freedom I still procrastinate. I feel like I won't be able to handle this class, but that is exactly why I need to take this. This is my chance to change everything around, because right now for me it's do or die. Plus I love watching movies, so what better way to fix myself then to do something I actually have an interest in.

When I think of movies, I first think of the presentation. I think how movies are being viewed is the most important. Be it at the cinema, on a tablet, or at my computer on Netflix. I also think about the very special trait of film. Movies are wonderful in that they combine so many other art forms (music and picture) into one format. It's difficult to choose a favorite movie for me, there are so many categories and specific aspects that make films stand out for me. So instead I'll choose the movie that I've watched the most. Little Shop of Horrors, directed by Frank Oz. It had the perfect blend of horror, camp, and music that hooked me as a young boy. It also featured a lovable villain performed by Levi Stubbs, the lead vocalist of R&B group, Four Tops.

My expectations for this class is about looking at movie and doing a film analysis about the movie and what’s the meaning of it. Also my expectations for this class is making our own movies and figuring out different film project in the class. The expectations for myself in the class is hoping that I will pay a lot attention to the class and do a lot better at managing my time after school. My Activities outside my school are doing the scholarship program meetings every Tuesdays. I plan on managing my time more wisely is by doing more computer work during school, and hopefully after school. One example my typical day is nothing much but most of the time watching TV and just relaxing and I plan on devoting my time is by working more on a computer during school and/or after school.

What I think of when I hear the word movie is when I think of literally movie pictures with actors that are playing the character in front of the camera, and with screenwriters, cinematographers, and the director that are operating behind the camera. I also think about if the movie is about just entertainment or with entertainment with a message behind it. My favorite movie is Forrest Gump because I think that the movie is really inspiring and also that I think it has an inspiring quote such as ‘’life is a box of chocolates, you’ll never know what you’re going to get’’. My other favorite movie is black hawk down is because it’s based on a true story from The Battle in Somalia and it can be heartbreaking in most scenes. And my other favorite movie is saving private Ryan is because it’s also based of the invasion of Normandy, and it also has an amazing story behind the movie.

  13. My expectations for this class are a lot of work and very time consuming because of what I've heard from previous film students. I don't have any after school jobs but I do have cross country practice throughout the week. I think I'll be fine with time management because I'm usually always free.

I don't really have a favorite movie but if I had to pick one it would probably be Titanic because along with the main point of the boat sinking, there are a lot of other things to pay attention to. I also like how much detail was put into the ship while it was sinking. Titanic goes from a romance to a mix of an action/drama and that's why I like it

  14. My Expectations for this class are very high. I am excited to learn about the film industry, film theory, and how to make films. I am glad to finally learn about something I enjoy. I will devote my time to this class. My activities outside of school are mostly just cross country and track so my time won't be too hard to manage.

When I hear the word movie I think of a journey that takes you into your imagination for a few hours but makes you feel that an eternity has passed. Films have had a great affect on peoples lives throughout modern history. My favorite films are Annie Hall and The Godfather. Annie Hall is one of the best comedies of all time and revolutionized how comedy was written from that point on. The Godfather is great because of how well the story and the cinematography fit together perfectly.
